H.M Queen Sofia received on Friday, 14 october in Leon the Mano Amiga award, which recognizes the work of institutions, persons and researchers.

H. M Queen Sofia attended gala ceremony, where she received the Mano Amiga award in the category of individual recognition from the general public for their efforts and personal dedication for decades in the fight against Alzheimer's. In this edition also received these awards Dr. Pablo Martinez-Lage, in the individual category, for his professional involvement in the investigation of disease and early diagnosis, as well as the European Working Group of People with Dementia of Alzheimer Europe, who received the Mano Amiga Award in the institutional category. The reason, innovative initiative to create a working group of people affected by dementia and participating in decisions and projects of Alzheimer Europe

Gala awards ceremony was held in the City of Leon Auditorium.

A group of bagpipes and traditional flags received the guests at the entrance of the Auditorium.


During the gala ceremony, CIEN Foundation (Research Center of Neurological Diseases) received about 12,000 euros raised through sponsors of Mano Amiga Awards. The funds will go to Vallecas Project which is focused in analyzing more than 1,200 volunteers to advance the early diagnosis of the disease. The journalists Irma Soriano and Luis del Olmo presented this edition, which brought together more than 700 people on the 25th anniversary of the association.

This year the theme of the gala focused on the images and their importance in the world of Alzheimer

October 14, 2016.- León was on 14 October European capital of Alzheimer's. And this time, the gala featured a very special guest H.M. Queen Sofia, who attended and received one of the awards. The event was in the City of Leon Auditorium and a group of bagpipes and traditional flags received the guests at the entrance of the Auditorium. The journalists Irma Soriano and Luis del Olmo presented this edition, which brought together more than 700 people on the 25th anniversary of the association.

As is tradition, the International Mano Amiga Awards promote the role of inspirational people and institutions who encourage and support the quest for effective solutions to alzheimer´s. In this edition, recognition from the general public went to H.M. Queen Sofia, for their efforts and personal dedication for decades to the fight against Alzheimer's.
To Dr. Pablo Martinez-Lage, for his professional involvement in the investigation of disease and early diagnosis And the European Working Group of people with dementia, Alzheimer Europe, for giving voice and participation in decision-making to people affected by dementia.

This year, the gala ceremony focused in the universe of cinema as theme of the gala . On the stage of the International Mano Amiga Awards played countertenor Carlos Mena, accompanied by Susana García de Salazar in the piano and different personalities which presented the winners awards: David Sousa, director and filmmaker, AngelCedazo, codirector of Alzheimer's department at the Karolinska Institute (Swedish institution awarded in another edition of International Mano Amiga Award) and Senen Rodriguez, from Alzheimer Leon, who was responsible for presenting the award to H. M Queen Sofia.

Also in this edition, Alzheimer Leon wanted to show the importance of research. For this edition Alzheimer Leon Association developed a fundraising campaign "Invest in research and together will delete Alzheimer's'.

At the awards ceremony were present previous winners, as well as representatives of associations of Alzheimer's from other parts of Spain and political and institutional representatives. Among these authorities, the mayor of Leon, Antonio Silvan, the government delegate in Castilla y León, María José Salgueiro, Secretary of State for Social Services and Equality, Susana Camarero.

Reception in the city hall of León in the morning
The first ceremony was held in the morning in the city hall of Leon, where the mayor, Antonio Silvan, offered a oficial reception to the city to participants of the gala. The meeting attended by the awards (Dr. Pablo Martinez-Lage and Ana Diaz and Helen Rochford as representatives of Alzheimer Europe) as well as winners in previous editions, jurors, members of Alzheimer Leon and sponsors of International Mano Amiga Awards.

There are three categories in the International Mano Amiga Awards:

  • Mano Amiga Award in the institutional category, which recognizes the work of public and private institutions, falls this year in the European Working Group of people with dementia - EWGPWD - Alzheimer Europe. The reason, for its contribution to ensure that the activities, projects and meetings of Alzheimer Europe duly reflect the priorities and views of people with dementia and their efforts for a new image of dementia in society and for people who want to lead an active and independent life under the conditions of dementia. The work of EWGPWD is an example for all the people affected by Alzheimer disease, their families, caregivers and whole society, helping to raise awareness and increasing knowledge about the disease. The award was received by Helen Rochford, vice-chairperson of the EWGPWD and Ana Diaz, representative of Alzheimer Europe.

  • Mano Amiga Award in the individual category, which recognizes the work of professionals: for Dr. Pablo Martinez-Lage, for his efforts and involvement in research on Alzheimer's disease and early diagnosis. As an example, the 'Know Alzheimer' pioneering initiative that has managed to unite efforts of researchers, health workers and family associations to enhance and share knowledge about the disease.

  • Mano Amiga Award in the category of individual recognition from the general public which recognizes the work done anonymously by people and groups in favor of those affected: to H.M. Queen Sofia, for their efforts and personal dedication, for decades, to the fight against Alzheimer's. This support set up in the creation of the Queen Sofia Foundation, which has been the initial effort of the Alzheimer Center, a social and health project in which Alzheimer's disease is approached from three different angles: research, education and welfare service. The award aims to reward the continuous work of H.M. Queen Sofia with the associations, their presence in all situations where it is required, as well as support and closeness beyond its institutional agenda.

All winners received a painting realized by Luis Garcia Zurdo, one of the great artist in stained glass. The jury that selected the candidates was formed by Angel Cedazo, codirector area Alzheimer's of the Karolinska Institute, Maria Angeles Pérez, CIEN Foundation manager, Máximo Cayon, official chronicler of the city of Leon, the writer and journalist Pedro Trapiello, Miguel Cordero del Campillo, emeritus professor at the University of León, Joaquín Juan, primary care doctor and professor at the School of Social Work of Leon and Mercedes Garcia, president of Alzheimer Leon.

Among the winners in previous editions include the Alzheimer`s National Plan in France, CIEN Foundation, Reina Sofia Foundation and Pascual Maragall Foundation, doctors Merce Boada, Barry Reisberg, researchers Javier de Felipe and Jesus Avila, the Karolinska Institute, Manuel Diez, who care of his wife, suffering from Alzheimer's, during 29 years, among others.
